I think taking on this role was one of the bravest things this man did. I think that picking himself up after the death of his wife and a stint in a mental institution, battling through bipolar disorder and the physical impairments that those medications created at that time, and continuing that role, that was beyond bravery. There are different kinds of courage, and performing in a role, an often horrifying role, because you know it brings pleasure to others, that’s something that is devalued by society, that is all but ignored. But Jeremy Brett didn’t do it for the money. He didn’t do it because it was comfortable. He did it because he knew people loved watching him do it.
